Why do we say Merry Christmas?

Merry Christmas versus happy Christmas
“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” are words commonly heard during the holiday season and are often printed on Christmas cards and gift wrapping. Have you ever wondered why Merry Christmas, rather than Happy Christmas is used as a Christmas greeting?

Laura Legend investigates the terminology “Merry Christmas”…

Merry Christmas is a common phrase exchanged amongst Christians during the holidays. However, religions that have celebrations around Christmas time, like the Jewish Hanukkah, are more inclined to say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas”.

The term Christmas is a translation of the Old English version – Cristes Maesse which is the Mass of Christ.

Under modern day definitions of the word “merry” means gay, cheerful or festive. However, when the saying Merry Christmas first came about, the widely accepted meaning of the word was peaceful or blessed. Thus, wishing someone a Merry Christmas is truly wishing them a blessed or peaceful Mass of Christ.

Christmas, under that definition, is a Christian holiday set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ, the son of God and the savior. The Jewish faith does not view Jesus Christ as the son of God. The believe a savior is coming, the Messiah, but do not grasp the belief that Christ was the Messiah, thus they don’t celebrate Christmas as the Christians do.
Did you know?Christianity and Judaism are the most similar religions in existence as both hold that the Old Testament is the authoritative word of God; however, the New Testament is not accepted in Judaism.

Rather, they celebrate Hanukkah which some people call the Jewish Christmas although it is not similar to Christmas celebrations except that it falls into the holiday season. Hanukkah is a celebration of the rededication of the temple at Jerusalem and gaining of religious freedom to practice Judaism after a long-term occupation of the city.

Thus, while Christians bid you Merry Christmas, those of the Judaism faith will wish you Happy Holidays.

Review: Don 2 has no edge-of-the-seat moments

For an action film with the central plot setting us up for a robbery inside a major bank, Don 2's pacing is very slow, writes Aseem Chhabra.

In his new film Don 2 director Farhan Akhtar takes his time introducing us to his lead, played by Shahrukh Khan. We get a whiff of Khan, a slight sense of his presence, with close shots and shaky hand held camera. There we see his arm, part of his unshaven face, his dark glasses.  As he travels up a meandering river in Thailand, we notice Khan's rather odd looking long hair (a wig, of course), with dreadlocks.  And there is cigarette smoke rolling around his face in slow motion. It is all very sexy and so cool!

Through most of the film Khan is very cool. He often has a twinkle in his eye, a slight mischievous smile, as he speaks dialogues like "Touché" and "Kya karen sweetheart, we are everywhere" (in response to Lara Dutta's startled look on hearing that an Indian is a vice president of a major German bank).  Then there are the Don-isms (Don Says) where he speaks in third person spouting statements like "Don ko pakadna mushqil hee nahih, namumkin hai," and "Don apne doston ka haal puche na puche, apne dushmon ki khabar hamesha rakhta hai."

He walks with a swagger, whether in a Malaysian prison wearing an orange jump suit, or on the dance floor with Dutta. There is a rhythm in his body, as he sways his shoulders and his arms walking up in the Zara Dil Ko Thaam Lo song sequence.

And then how can one forget when Khan strikes the ultimate pose -- the camera captures him at an angle, as he slightly tilts his back, with his arms open sideways. It is King Khan's  signature attempt to remind us that he is the master of the universe.  At least his fans believe that.

A lot of Akhtar's new film is full of such cool elements with sequences set in sumptuous foreign locations -- the French Riviera, the jungles of Thailand, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich and finally Berlin. Don 2 is beautifully shot, well lit and has a very clean look, whether on the streets of Berlin or inside the studio, thanks to Akhtar's terrific cinematographer Jason West.

But then, as with many good intentioned, and technically well crafted Bollywood films, Don 2, fails in the key test. Akhtar is definitely one of the smartest filmmakers in Bollywood, but this time he presents us a story, plot and script that is dull, almost boring. When we are not seeing Khan's swagger, or hearing the hip upbeat background score by Shankar Ehsaan Loy , Don 2 starts to lose steam.

Part of the problem is that despite its action segments, Don 2 is also a Bollywood film and so romance has to be a part of the plot. Towards the end of the film while bullets are flying everywhere, there is an unexpected, almost forced and laughable romantic moment between Khan and his co-star Priyanka Chopra. Everything pauses for the stars to look into each other eyes.

For an action film with the central plot setting us up for a robbery inside a major bank, the film's pacing is very slow.  Coupled with that, the script explains everything to us step-by-step. And if anyone was paying attention, following the convoluted plot where Don always manages to sweet charm the morons at Interpol, in the last five minutes Akhtar sums up the film with a quick recap, revealing many more details that were never shown to us before.  It is an old fashioned gimmick to make the audience say "Wow, we were fooled!"

For a suspense thriller, Don 2 has no edge-of-the-seat moments, despite a decent car chase sequence and a scene when Don jumps off a tall building in Berlin. One big problem is the timing of Don 2's release. Akhtar and his producing partner Ritesh Sidhwani (Khan and his wife Gauri are also listed as producers of the film) chose to release the film during Christmas weekend.  It is too bad that just a week before that, Tom Cruise  released his mega-budget action film of the season Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol (MI4). It is may be wrong to compare the two films, but watching MI4, I had to remind myself to breathe. As I sat through Don 2 -- a wannabe MI4, I was breathing too heavily, frustrated at the slow moving film.

Khan's charming presence aside, Don 2 is packed with uninspired performances by a large supporting cast. First in the line-up is Chopra as Roma, an Interpol officer located in Kuala Lumpur. She is attractive looking, with her big pouting lips, but most of the time Chopra acts like a school girl putting her hands on her forehead in exasperation saying "Damn it," or a character out of an Enid Blyton book, collecting clues to solve the Mystery of the Missing Don

Om Puri, who once was one of the finest actors in India, is such a caricature here. He looks tired as Vishal Malik, Chopra's boss at Interpol. Despite his very Leslie Nielsen appearance, he sounds positively silly, saying dialogues with his heavy throaty voice -- "It's over Don," or simply "It's Don" (as he answers a cell phone.)

Boman Irani  tries hard to look menacing, and he does partially succeed. Kunal Kapoor appears in the second half of the film as a computer hacker, but he is so sweet and good natured, and has a lovely pregnant German girlfriend. We know that nothing bad will happen to Kapoor's Sameer. Don may be a negative character, but Khan is a Bollywood star. He has to have a heart of gold and he cannot do bad things to good people.

Brazilian baby 'born healthy with two heads... and both are suckling mother's breasts'

Mother only found about her baby's abnormalities minutes before birth
This is the second registered case of a two-headed baby being born in Brazil this year

A Brazilian woman who has given birth to a baby with two heads, admitted she had initially expected twins.
Maria de Nazare, gave birth by caesarean at a hospital in Anajas, in Brazil's northern Para state, with her newborn weighing 9.9lbs.
And in a tribute to the religious celebrations at Christmas, she has decided to call the pair Emanoel and Jesus.
Following the birth of her baby, mother Maria, 25, admitted that she had been told she was set to welcome twins.
But following a number of tests, doctors have revealed that the baby has two brains and two spines but shares one heart, lungs, liver and pelvis.
The hospital's director, Claudionor Assis de Vasconcelos, told Brazil's O Povo newspaper that the woman decided to travel to the hospital because she was feeling strong abdominal pains.
The 25-year-old mother, who lives in a rural area of the state, had no ultra-sound scans during her pregnancy and only found out about the abnormality minutes before the baby was born at 1am on Monday morning.
He said: 'When doctors scanned her they realised that the baby had two heads and that a normal birth would be a great risk both for mother and baby. The caesarean took an hour because the baby was sitting down.
'Despite all the problems we have as a small interior hospital we managed to save both mother and baby, which was our aim. And for us it was a great surprise to find out that the child was in really good health.'

1 in 13 teenage girls in US have had group sex

One in 13 teenage girls, aged 14 to 20 years, has engaged in group sex, with more than half of them admitting that they were pressured to do so, a new study has revealed.

The study said those young women were more likely to have been exposed to pornography and childhood sexual abuse than their peers. For the study, Emily Rothman, associate professor of community health sciences at Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), and colleagues surveyed 328 females who had utilized a Boston-area community or school-based health clinic, to explore whether they had ever had sex with multiple partners, either consensual or forced.
The authors call this sexual experience 'multi-person sex,' or MPS, in order to underscore that it refers to any group sex experience on a continuum from gang rape to sex parties. Of the 7.3 percent who said they had group sex, more than half reported being pressured to engage in the group-sex situation. Forty-five percent reported a lack of condom use by a male participant during the most recent group-sex encounter.
Participants with MPS experience also were more likely to report cigarette smoking, dating violence victimization, or ever being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease, the study found. In addition, those who had seen pornography in the past month were approximately five times as likely as those who had not seen pornography to report ever having had a group-sex experience.
The average age of the first group-sex experience was 15.6 years old. The majority of those who reported such activity said it was a one-time experience; 21 percent had multiple group-sex experiences. One-third reported using alcohol or drugs prior to their most recent experience, but half of those girls reported that their alcohol or drug use was not voluntary, indicating that they were 'liquored up' or drugged by their sexual partner.
Rothman and colleagues said that multi-person sex appeared to pose a potential risk to sexual and reproductive health, as only 55 percent of participants reported that condoms were used consistently during their most recent MPS. "The majority of MPS-experienced girls in this sample reported being pressured, threatened, coerced, or forced to participate in MPS at least once," they said. The study has been published in the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Social networking website only for women

London: A 30-year-old Canadian woman has come up with a social networking website exclusively for females.

The site Luluvise.com bans males from joining, the Daily Mail reported.

It connects though other networking websites LinkedIn and Facebook. Since its launch Wednesday, it already has 1,000 users in 69 countries.

“Luluvise uses Facebook to make registration easier. We do not post to walls or make Luluvise information public anywhere or to other Facebook users,” creator Alexandra Chong was quoted as saying.

More than 500 men submitted their emails to get access to the site, but instead received an email reading: “Hey Dude, you’re a dude.”

The daily, however, said it was relatively easy for men to get around the ban. All they need to do is set up a fake Facebook profile as a woman, and make friends with themselves on that social network.

The Dirty Picture collects Rs 63.1 crore, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl loses

Hindi movie Ladies vs Ricky Bahl has finally hit the dust. Well at least as far as its comparison with The Dirty Picture is concerned, Ladies vs Rickey Bahl has fizzled out, while The Dirty Picture seems to be sizzling and will keep on doing so for some time.

According to sources, Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl has not only earned the tag of being a copy cat of Band Baaja Baaraat, it has also failed to make any noise at the box office. With just Rs 16.75 crore (all-India net collections) to boast about, over its first weekend at the box-office, it has fallen flat into the “below average” slot.

On the other hand, the Vidya Balan starrer The Dirty Picture is doing very well at the box-office. The film has already collected Rs 52.5 crore in its first week, and easily adding another Rs 10.6 crore over its second weekend at the box-office.

As is evident from the films first 10-day total collection of Rs. 63.1 crore (all-India net), The Dirty Picture has not only beaten Ladies vs Ricky Bahl in India only, but globally as well.

Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’s total collection from the five international markets [U.K., U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand and Fiji] is a measly Rs 2.15 cr only. While The Dirty Picture is setting even the international markets on fire.

Porn movie on Neo Sports. n govt. channel DD1 SEHWAG RAPING 11 BLACKS....:)

On Thursday, anything was possible for virendra sehwag. By the time he was out for 219, the highest individual score in ODIs, there were still 53.3 overs left to be bowled at Indore. But everyone knew the contest was over. Cricket is a team sport. But not when Sehwag is in the mood and in torrent.
This was a Viru, Viru special. Like the online smash hit, it instantly took India by storm. But there was no kolaveri, or murderous rage, on display. It was vintage kola-Viru - nonchalant execution, Sehwag style. His strokes were violent; his demeanour was almost child-like.

The stand-in India captain even joked with the Caribbeans. He seemed to be batting for pleasure, as if sharing a gift of the gods with lesser mortals. No surprise that despite being at the receiving end, they all shook hands with him when he departed. That included captain Darren sammywho had let slip the dolliest of chances when Sehwag was on 170.
